Projects

  • The CERES/NBII Thesaurus Partnership Project - CERES and National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Biological Resources Division (BRD) are collaborating on the development of an Integrated Environmental Thesaurus and Thesaurus Networking Tool Set for Metadata Development and Keyword Searching.

  • COVAX - Contemporary Culture Virtual Library Archives in XML - plans to combine document descriptions and digitised surrogates from libraries, archives and museum, to build a global system for search and retrieval. It will allow the widely distributed primary documents to be accessed regardless of their location.

COVAX has four basic aims: dissemination of European Culture Heritage, facilitating access for European citizens to primary sources of intellectual, cultural and scientific heritage stored in archives, libraries and museums; exploitation over the Internet of existing cultural infrastructures; the use of standards in the field of information structure and retrieval and interoperability between systems (interoperable access to distributed resources) based on the complementary capabilities of each partner.

  • LIMBER - Language Independent Metadata Browsing of European Resources: Aims to provide multilingual access to European data archives.
  • MACS - Mulitlingual ACess to Subjects. Aims to provide multilingual subject access to library catalogues enabling users to simultaneously search the catalogues of the project's partner libraries in the language of their choice (English, French, German). Multilingual search is made possible thanks to the equivalence links created between the three indexing languages used in these libraries: SWD (for German), RAMEAU (for French) and LCSH (for English). Topics (headings) from the three lists are analysed to determine whether they are exact or partial matches, of a simple or complex nature. The end result is neither a translation nor a new thesaurus but a mapping of existing and widely used indexing languages. The partners are: the Swiss National Library (SNL), project leader, the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), The British Library (BL) and Die Deutsche Bibliothek (DDB). The project is running under the auspices of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL). Prototype can be accessed by registering through the website.
  • Renardus: The aim of the Renardus project is to provide users with integrated access, through a single interface, to quality-controlled subject gateways and other Internet-based, distributed services.
